Derry Girls FTW

Derry Girls has been crowned Radio Times Comedy Champion, and the cast are weak

Roll on series 2.

GIVEN THE IMPACT Derry Girls has had since its launch, it’s hard to believe there has only been six episodes of the Channel 4 show.

Seriously, just six? We feel like we’ve known Erin and the crew for years now.

After premiering in January of this year, Lisa McGee’s comedy proved an instant hit, and last night it (rightfully) claimed the Radio Times Comedy Champion title.

With a sharp, succinct script and laugh-out-loud performances from the ensemble cast, the show’s depiction of secondary school life – set against the backdrop of The Troubles -  struck a chord with viewers the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.

Derry Girls went head-to-head with Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Inside No 9, and after one million votes were cast, Derry Girls reigned supreme.

It was a tight one though – something which wasn’t lost on the show’s creators.

Shortly before the final tally of 50.1% to 49.9% was announced, Steve Pemberton suggested they simply call it a draw – something the Derry Girls creator was all for.

However, once voting came to an official close, most members of the Derry Girls cast took to Twitter to celebrate the news and thank fans for their support.

First up, we had Erin.

Then Michelle got involved.

And then we had Clare.

Fans of the show celebrated alongside the cast and crew, and – as is their God-given right – indulged in a little humblebragging over the role they played in the show’s win.
