OVER THE WEEKEND, it emerged that Roscommon/South Leitrim was the sole constituency to vote No in the same sex marriage referendum.

It caused quite the stir.

Yesterday evening, Yes Equality Roscommon addressed the controversy in a heartfelt post on its official Facebook page.

Firstly, volunteers from the group described the campaign as an “incredible experience” and spoke of the “heart-warming support” they received from the local electorate.

However, they also acknowledged that they were faced with a lack of resources and little support from local politicians.

Unfortunately, we were small in number, and did not have the human resources to do, for example, large scale canvasses as seen in other areas. We also suffered from a lack of support from local politicians. We watched in envy as well known politicians in almost every other area in the country got publicly and deeply involved in the campaigns in their areas. Our multiple letters, texts and emails to our elected representatives went, for the most part, unanswered.

According to the group, the two exceptions were Fine Gael’s Frank Feighan and Maura Hopkins.

The group went on to thank the volunteers, local businesses and the main branch of Yes Equality for the support received throughout the campaign.

In addressing the final result, the group reminded everyone that 17,615 people did vote Yes and noted that they helped make history.

And they also had this lovely message for those who voted No.

This democratic decision of the people will change Ireland, for the better, forever, and has been and will continue to be heard around the world. We feel lucky to have been part of this change. Legal equality is here, and we hope that it will play a big part in eradicating discrimination and prejudice in society.
